Stephen Johnston

Bio

Johnston’s work explores the relationship between our humanity and changing culture.Currently he is experimenting by deconstructing some of societies subjective principles of identity. By observing mankind and distinguishing between the subjective opinions and objective truths within culture, allows him to tear back the labels society stamps on us. This reveals a surprising and unsuspected conclusion of what lies beneath all the superficialness of life.

It is important for Johnston to render accurately his unique staged scenes with a vibrant and rich oil pallet, but yet not so much as to abolish the substance and quality of the paint. Allowing elements of expression from brush strokes to breathe life into the paintings, setting them apart from photographs.

Johnston is currently finishing a degree in Fine and Applied Arts in the University of Ulster. Born in 1987 in Co. Down, this ambitious young artist has already tasted success on a national level; winning the regional final of ‘Art of Nurture’ competition in Manchester Art Gallery earlier this year. This success has given him the opportunity to hang his work in the Saatchi gallery later this year.
